In Stellendam, near the Dutch Haringvliet sluices, A Seal is the official seal rehabilitation center for the southwestern Netherlands. Sick, injured, and orphaned seals are rescued here, treated with care, and released back into the wild.
From the moment you enter, large viewing windows let you see the seals up close. Watch them swim, rest, or play. Visitors follow the full recovery process, from medical care to final rehabilitation. Each seal has a story – some tangled in trash, others sick or motherless.
Interactive displays, videos, and an educational lab share fascinating facts about seals, their behavior, and the fragile marine ecosystem. Children can do crafts, go on scavenger hunts, or pretend to be a seal doctor.
Seal releases are open to the public. Seeing a seal return to the sea after weeks of recovery is a powerful and emotional experience.
A Seal also focuses on environmental education. Learn about pollution, climate threats, and how small changes can help nature. The passion of the team and volunteers is felt throughout the center.
The facility is accessible for all ages and easy to combine with a beach trip or visit to the nearby Delta Works. The gift shop offers sustainable items, and the café overlooks the dunes.
A visit to A Seal is touching, educational, and inspiring. It’s a place where people connect with nature – and maybe even sponsor a seal afterward.
