The Valkenburg Castle Ruins are a unique historical landmark in the Netherlands. Perched on a hill in the town of Valkenburg, this is the country’s only hilltop castle, offering stunning views, medieval atmosphere and a glimpse into both aboveground and underground history.
Built around 1100, the castle played an important strategic role for centuries. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times, until it was permanently demolished in 1672. What remains today are dramatic ruins with thick stone walls, staircases, vaulted rooms and old gates.
Visitors can reach the ruins via a walking path or by cable car from Valkenburg’s town center. Once at the top, the panoramic view of the Geul Valley is breathtaking. You’re free to wander through the remains of the great hall, towers and chapel, with signs explaining the castle’s history.
A fascinating feature of the site is its connection to the Velvet Cave, a network of underground tunnels originally used for escape and protection. These can be explored with a combined ticket, adding depth and mystery to your visit.
Families will appreciate treasure hunts, dress-up opportunities and fun educational features. Events such as medieval fairs, reenactments and light displays are regularly held on site.
There is a small café with a terrace offering refreshments and a lovely view. The ruins are open year-round, easy to reach by public transport or car, and a favorite stop for hikers and cyclists exploring the area.
Valkenburg Castle Ruins blend history, nature and imagination. Whether you're here for the view, the stories or the atmosphere, this site delivers a memorable and meaningful experience.
