The Museum of the Battle of Heiligerlee is dedicated to one of the key moments in Dutch history: the Battle of Heiligerlee on 23 May 1568. This battle is considered the first victory of the Dutch rebels over the Spanish forces and marks the beginning of the Eighty Years' War, the struggle for Dutch independence.

In the museum, visitors learn about the lead-up to the revolt, the details of the battle, and its consequences. Central to the story is Count Louis of Nassau, brother of William of Orange, who defeated the Spanish commander Jean de Ligne. However, Louis' brother, Count Adolf of Nassau, was killed during the battle and is still commemorated.

The museum's collection includes weapons, clothing, documents, and maps from the 16th century. Interactive displays and scale models bring the events of the battle to life. The role of the village of Heiligerlee and its people is also highlighted.

The museum is located next to the battle monument, a memorial column erected in 1873. From there, visitors can explore the former battlefield via walking trails. A visit to the Museum of the Battle of Heiligerlee offers a powerful insight into the beginning of the Dutch fight for independence.
