The Hondsrug is an elongated ridge of sand stretching from Groningen to Emmen, forming the only UNESCO Global Geopark in the Netherlands. The area was formed during the Saale glaciation around 150,000 years ago, when glaciers shaped the landscape into characteristic ridges and valleys.
The landscape features dolmens, traditional villages, forests, heathlands, and stream valleys. Visitors can enjoy various hiking and cycling routes, such as the Flintenroute and the Boomkroonpad. The Hunebed Centre in Borger offers insights into prehistory and the construction of dolmens.
The Hondsrug is a region where nature, culture, and history converge – ideal for a day trip or a longer holiday.
