Blaauwe Kamer, 14, Wageningen, 6702 PA, Gelderland, Nederland
Located between the Grebbeberg and the Nederrijn river, just outside the city of Wageningen, lies the Blauwe Kamer – one of the Netherlands’ most stunning natural areas. This dynamic nature reserve offers open landscapes, rare wildlife, and a peaceful retreat for walkers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers.
Originally a sand quarry, the area was transformed in the 1990s into a floodplain nature reserve where the river is allowed to shape the landscape. Wild Konik horses and Galloway cattle roam freely, helping to maintain biodiversity and open spaces. This natural balance creates an ever-changing environment rich in plant and animal life.
Well-marked walking paths lead visitors through marshlands, riverbanks, grasslands, and viewpoints. The bird hide is a must-see, offering excellent views of spoonbills, cormorants, ospreys, and sometimes even beavers. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious visitor, you’re bound to see something special.
The Blauwe Kamer is beautifully situated between river and forest. On one side you’ll see the wide open Rhine, and on the other, the wooded slopes of the Grebbeberg. A visit can easily be combined with a hike through the surrounding forests or up to the Grebbeberg plateau for panoramic views.
At the entrance, a small visitor center provides information on the history, ecology, and wildlife of the area. It’s also the starting point for guided tours and educational activities. There is a small café where you can enjoy a coffee or lunch with views over the floodplain.
The Blauwe Kamer is accessible year-round and reveals a different face in every season. Spring brings wildflowers and nesting birds, while autumn wraps the wetlands in mist and golden tones.
A walk through the Blauwe Kamer is a journey into a living, breathing landscape shaped by water and time.
