Molenkade Nederwaard, 1, Kinderdijk, 2961 AT, Zuid-Holland, Nederland

Kinderdijk is one of the most iconic and photographed places in the Netherlands. Located in the province of South Holland, this small village is home to a line of nineteen historic windmills that represent centuries of Dutch expertise in water management. Since 1997, Kinderdijk has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built in the 18th century, the windmills were designed to drain excess water from the low-lying polders into the river Lek. They are part of a larger hydraulic system of dikes, pumps and sluices, showcasing the Dutch fight against water.

At Kinderdijk, you can admire the windmills from the outside or visit several that are open to the public. These museum windmills show how millers used to live and work. Audio tours and guided walks provide insights into the mechanics of the mills and the challenges of living below sea level.

The area can be explored by walking, cycling or even by boat. Scenic paths run alongside canals and fields, making it a perfect destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.

The visitor center includes interactive exhibits, a cinema, a panoramic tower and background information on the history of the site. There’s also a shop for souvenirs and a café with lovely water views.

Kinderdijk is easy to reach by car, public transport or water taxi from Rotterdam. The site is mostly wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.

Whether you're interested in engineering, Dutch history, beautiful landscapes or simply a peaceful outing, Kinderdijk offers a unique and enriching experience that reflects the heart of the Netherlands.
