In the forests of Drenthe, near the village of Drouwen, you’ll find the Boomkroonpad – a unique treetop walk that lets you experience the forest from above. Rising up to 22.5 meters, this elevated path takes you through the canopy of oaks, pines, and beeches, offering breathtaking views and a new way to connect with nature.
Your journey begins underground, in the root tunnel, where you explore the hidden world beneath the forest floor. Then, a winding staircase leads you up into the trees, where a metal walkway guides you high above the ground. From this height, the forest reveals its patterns, sounds, and colors in ways you’ve never seen before.
The Boomkroonpad is part of a larger nature center managed by Staatsbosbeheer and is located in the Hondsrug UNESCO Geopark – a region known for its geological and cultural heritage. From the viewing tower, you can see the vast Drenthe woodland and might even spot a deer or a bird of prey.
At the information center, you can learn more about the forest ecosystem, join guided walks, or take part in family-friendly activities like scavenger hunts. Numerous hiking and cycling routes begin here, making it easy to spend a full day immersed in nature.
It’s an ideal destination for families. Kids will love the thrill of walking so high in the air, while adults enjoy the peace and panoramic views. With picnic spots and a small café nearby, it’s also a relaxing place to unwind.
The Boomkroonpad in Drouwen invites you to slow down, look up, and experience the forest from a whole new angle.
