Near Pieterburen and around National Park Het Lauwersmeer you can enjoy beautiful walking- or cycling tours. In this area of water, rugged grasslands and islands, more than a hundred species breed - such as the white-tailed eagle and spoonbill – and more than tens of thousands of geese hibernate every year. Truly recommendable for bird lovers! In addition to the seal center, Pieterburen also offers various antique shops and a botanic garden with an old church.

Picturesque ‘Wierden villages’ (ancient dwelling mounds) such as Ezinge and Niehove are located in the immediate vicinity. The museum Wierdenland in Ezinge gives a good picture of how these ancient villages originated. There is a nice cycling tour along 15 ‘wierden’. In Niehove you can admire the Romanesque-gothic church from the 13th century.
